West Chester University welcomes a new organization to campus: a chapter of the Rhetoric Society of America (RSA). Students with interest in communications and English will be especially interested in this organization.

The purpose of RSA, according to their website, is “to gather from all relevant fields of study, and to disseminate among its members current knowledge of rhetoric; to identify new areas within the subject of rhetoric in which research is needed, and to stimulate such research; to encourage experimentation in the teaching of rhetoric; to facilitate professional cooperation among its members, to organize meetings at which members may exchange findings and ideas; and to sponsor the publication of such materials dealing with rhetoric.”

The WCU chapter of RSA aims “to facilitate and encourage the exploration and understanding of rhetorics. A graduate-led organization – welcoming undergraduate participation – which aims to increase understanding of the practices and history of rhetoric, as well as prepare students academically and professionally for Ph.D.-level study,” according to their Orgsync page.

“Students will be better equipped to recognize the rhetoric in their daily lives and to analyze it to make informed decisions,” said RSA vice president Kelly Langan. “We also discuss aspects of pursuing a Ph.D., so it’s good for people who want to move on to higher education.”

For students who are interested in joining WCU’s chapter of the Rhetoric Society of America, on the second and fourth Sunday of every month at 4 p.m. The next meeting is on April 14 in Main 132 and it is open to any and all majors.

Clare Haggerty is a second-year student majoring in English. She can be reached at CH757342@wcupa.edu.
