On Aug. 19, 2025, Warner Bros. Games, TT Games, DC and the LEGO Group announced that LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is scheduled to be released to players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. This announcement generated an uproar of excitement and anticipation. Already, popular opinion suggests that the new LEGO Batman game is the most anticipated out of everything that the 2025 Gamescom Opening Night Live had to offer. This means LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight outranked games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Resident Evil: Requiem and more.

In the official reveal trailer, viewers and players are shown  many recognizable scenes, characters and key aspects that create a sense of nostalgia for Batman fans. There are obvious references to “The Dark Knight” Trilogy featuring Christian Bale. The statement, “I need to become more than a man. I need to become a symbol,” is a direct quote from “Batman Begins” (2005). Simultaneously, the trailer shows scenes of Bruce Wayne training, which are clearly inspired by  the film. Not to mention the short clip of Bruce Wayne on the plane discussing his future with his butler, Alfred, and Bruce Wayne discovering the Batcave, which is also a direct connection to “The Dark Knight” Trilogy. Many Batman fans are familiar with “The Dark Knight” Trilogy, which explains why only the first thirty seconds of the trailer were enough to stir more than enough excitement for the Batman and the gaming community entirely. For those who may consider yourselves a bit more old school, don’t worry! The developers didn’t forget you. The trailer includes a short reference of an altercation between Batman and the Joker which references “Batman” (1989), directed by Tim Burton. This also created a ripple effect of positive popular opinion.

That’s not all. The trailer also sheds light on the gameplay and mechanics that players will experience in  LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. While playing as Batman, the player can glide, complete stealth objectives, drive the Batmobile, initiate takedowns and partake in advanced combat mechanics. Viewers are also shown a short clip of Batman using a gel-like substance to blow up a wall. Some of you may be thinking, “Well he’s Batman. That checks out,” but these details are the key to why this game has gained so much popularity,  long before its intended release. These details were inspired by Batman: Arkham, a series of Batman video games developed by Rocksteady Studios. The series is known for being a very popular and successful franchise in the gaming industry. In fact, Batman: Arkham Asylum held the Guinness World Record for “Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever” until 2011. Even so, in 2011 the title of “Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever” was handed to Batman Arkham Asylum’s sequel, Batman: Arkham City. So, it isn’t really a surprise that including aspects from the Batman: Arkham franchise is sure to create a buzz around the games release in 2026.

The creators of this new LEGO Batman game definitely did their homework by incorporating some of the best Batman media all into LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. The DC Comics, “The Dark Knight” Trilogy, the Batman movies directed by Tim Burton and The Batman: Arkham game series are all included in what players should expect from LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. However, that isn’t where it ends. The engine of the Batmobile roars and there is a striking similarity to the “The Batman,” (2022), starring Robert Pattinson. This detail is easy to miss, but the LEGO Batmobile is directly inspired from the Batmobile seen in the 2022 film. Following this reveal, the scene where the Penguin and the Batman are in a high speed chase is homaged in LEGO format. Following this scene in the trailer, we are shown the character known as Bane where he says, “Oh… You think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it. Molded by it”. This is another moment from the trailer that is clearly a homage to the “The Dark Knight” Trilogy, as this scene in particular is from the last of the three movies, “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012).

There is a lot to look forward to as players and fans wait for the release of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. With references to the Batman media from all of the years and the additions of everyone’s favorite characters and quests, it’s no surprise that LEGO Batman has been getting as much attention as it is. Considering everything the developers and writers considered in the creation of this game, it is obvious that they truly intend to make this game reflect the Legacy of the Dark Knight. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is already available for wishlisting and the game is set to be released in 2026. Be sure not to miss out, because the city needs you.
