VolleyballWest Chester University’s women’s volleyball team shut out Cheyney University Saturday afternoon 3-0, clinching a berth into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships.

The Lady Golden Rams improved their record to 6-4 in the conference and 20-13 on the season after defeating Cheyney 30-9, 30-8, 30-7. Cheyney fell to 0-10 in the conference and 0-24 on the season.

Laura Welch registered 12 digs, six kills and four aces in the win, while Tracy Williams posted eight kills and eight digs. Lisa Yeasted also had a great day, posting 31 assists. Karly Lotkowski registered 10 kills over Cheyney while Erica Kelleher racked in 10 service aces, seven digs and six kills throughout the match-up.

WCU will now face California University of Pennsylvania Friday Morning at Kutztown University in the first round of the PSAC playoffs. The Vulcans of California (PA) finished 30-2 on the season and 8-2 in the conference with both losses coming from Lock Haven University, who are the PSAC West Champions.

The win for the Golden Rams on Saturday coupled with Millersville loss to Kutztown produced a three-way tie for second place for West Chester, Millersville and Shippensburg.

The win on Saturday gave the Golden Rams its third 20-win season in the past five years. It is also only the fourth 20-win season in WCU history. The record number of wins in one season is 28 and was set back in 1982.

Sharon Bonaventure, head coach, took over the program in 2001 and has since produced a 98-58 record. She has also been in charge of the program for the past three 20-win campaigns.

This year, the Lady Golden Rams will make their fifth appearance in the PSAC Championship in history, their first since 2002.

Field Hockey

The West Chester University Golden Rams fell to La Salle 3- 2 in overtime Saturday Oct. 29 down on South Campus. Unfortunately, the Golden Rams were not able to make it to they playoffs this year.

Mary Glielmi and Samantha Krick each tapped in goals during the second half, but it was notenough to defeat LaSalle as they managed to tap in a goal just 47 seconds into overtime.

The Lady Rams finished the season 1-6 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and 8-10 on the season.

Men’s Soccer

The West Chester University’s men’s soccer team was eliminated from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference semi-finals after losing to California University of PA 3-2 in overtime, their second time in a week losing to California (PA) in overtime.

This loss marks the third time for the 2005 campaign that WCU suffered a loss to the Vulcans. The Golden Rams finished their season at 10-8-2 overall.

WCU scored first at 17:45 into the game as Alex Inman kicked in the goal. The rest of the first half was relatively quiet, not indicative of what would come during the second half.

The Vulcan came into the second half and tallied back to back goals from Marty Snee to give the Vulcans a 2-1 lead. Ricky Mucelli of West Chester tapped in the final goal of regular play to tie the game 2-2.

The winning goal game from California’s John Pazehoski, who pushed the ball in at 95:18.
