West Chester Teams Finish in Top Three of Business Challenge

PHILADELPHIA – Two teams from West Chester University placed in the top three in the 2005 Business Plan Challenge, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ (PICPA) Small Business Committee.
The second-place team of Shannon Chalfant (Elverson, Pa.), Rebecca Hershberger (West Chester, Pa.), and Tim Lieb (Doylestown, Pa.) won $750 and finished behind Delaware Valley College. A prize of $500 was awarded to the third-place team of Joe Callan (State College, Pa.), Andy Forsythe (Bloomsburg, Pa.), Stacy Hall (Collierville, Tenn.), and Jamie Jones (Mechanicsburg, Pa.). Slippery Rock University and Cabrini College finished behind West Chester.
The five finalist teams were chosen from among 22 submitted business plans statewide. This year’s competition called for student teams to create a plan to expand an existing hotel or motel to include a restaurant. In the final phase of the competition, held on Nov. 12, the teams were presented with a problem and given four hours to revise their plans and present them to a panel of CPAs. This program is designed to give students a real-world feel of how CPAs help small business clients succeed.
