I’m a first semester graduate student hear at WCU and so far my experience has been a good one. My classes are challenging (a little too much at times) and interesting, the professors are knowledgeable and mostly enjoyable to listen to. The campus is “user friendly” and in general, accomodating. My one problem with WCU, the food. As a commuter, I don’t have the luxury of running back to my apartment or dorm to have lunch. It’s also a little difficult to brown bag it all the time. My schedule works out that I can’t seem get to the cafeteria when it’s open. So my options, that I know of, have been Sykes and lunch trucks. Again, this is my first year, so there are other options I haven’t discovered yet. Maybe a better lunch truck or a nearby restaurant. My trouble is compounded by the fact that I am a vegetarian. My options are limited to mostly grilled cheese, pizza or salads. But I’m ok with my options because vegetarianism is my choice and I’ve come to accept the fact that places have a low variety of chooses. My problem is the quality of food. The food at Sykes is Terrible! I mean everything I’ve tried there. The soups, the macaroni and cheese, the mashed potatoes, the egg salad, the pizza (ok, the pizza’s not that bad. I think it was a Baldwin brother who compared pizza and sex saying that even when they were bad, they were still pretty good). Otherwise they are all tasteless, too dry, overcooked, or just old. I haven’t tried the tofu wrap, afraid that it’s been sitting for days. I can get a Boca burger if I feel like waiting for 20 minutes. From a lunch truck I’ve gotten a grilled cheese which was bathed in butter. Yes I am a vegetarian, but no I don’t feel like eating a salad every day. Even my non-vegetarian classmates agree. The food it terrible at Sykes. Now I don’t live my life on campus like most of the students here so I know I haven’t tried it all, but what I’ve tried is bad. Maybe being out of school for over 4 years has risen my standards, and my tastebuds to levels that I can’t tolerate mass produced cafeteria food anymore, but come on, how can you really mess up canned soup?Thank for your ear,
Hungry Student
