In the United States and a few other countries, February is observed as Black History Month. This month recognizes prominent leaders in the past such as MLK Jr., Harriett Tubman, Rosa Parks, Carter G. Woodson and more for their extraordinary influence and leadership roles in America.

In honor of Black History Month, the members of BlackMenUnited (BMU) at West Chester University will be hosting a series of events called Black Chronicles to discuss black culture, history, finances and buying black. The first event was on Feb. 6, which discussed the story of O.J. The next few events from BMU will be taking place over the following few weeks. On Feb. 13, they will be hosting a topic called Sex Olympics. The Sex Olympics will start at 7:15 p.m. in Sykes 10a. Following this event on Feb. 20 and Feb. 27, there will be a segment for Black Pockets and Male Eyez Only, respectively.

West Chester University’s Latino American Student organization (LASO) will present an event in honor of Black History Month, Black & Latino Excellence. This will give a chance for current students to meet and exchange knowledge from past black and Latino alumni who achieved and currently are achieving academic excellence and want to help by encouraging students that it is possible to do the same. This event will run from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24 in the Merion Science Center (room 112).

It will be best to go see a few events by these organizations to enlighten your knowledge about African American culture and to simply have fun with other students. Outside of West Chester’s campus, there are other events to travel and see such as the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Philadelphia History Museum and The African American Museum in Philadelphia.
