That time is rapidly approaching, Class of 2016: graduation. After this final semester in college, you’ll take another step into the world of the unknown as you begin searching for the perfect career.

Many people ask themselves, “How do I even begin the job search process?”

First, have a general idea of what career you would like to pursue. Be aware of your skills and strengths, as well as your weaknesses, and market yourself.

Start by creating a LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network that allows individuals to manage their professional identity, and gain access to multiple job opportunities.

After creating a LinkedIn profile, begin connecting with friends, peers, students, school faculty members, alumni, former internship supervisors and other professional contacts on the site. Give yourself the opportunity to learn about many different companies, gain a better understanding of your industry, and connect with other professionals in your field. You never know who is looking to hire a new employee.

Another way to start your job search is to connect with the Career Development Center on campus. Through the Twardowski Career Development Center, West Chester University students and alumni can access Ram Career Network.

Ram Career Network is WCU’s online career management system that gives students and alumni access to jobs, internships and events from employers who are recruiting.

The Career Development Center also provides assistance and useful feedback for any student who needs help with their resume, cover letter or any other professional document.

While looking for a job, it is extremely important to keep a professional image at all times–starting with social media accounts.

Delete any distasteful social media posts and pictures off of your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Unfortunately, no career has “bonging a beer” listed as a skill needed to be a future employee at their company.

To maintain a professional image, create business cards to carry around with you at all times.

You might be thinking to yourself, “Who uses business cards anymore?” As old-fashioned as it may seem, business cards allow you to leave a long-lasting, positive first impression when meeting a potential employer.

Bring your business card with you to a job interview as well. Handing an employer your business card will set you apart from the other candidates and help you stand out.

Always remember to give the employer a firm handshake and introduce yourself at the beginning of the interview.

It is important to be well-groomed and dressed appropriately for the job in which you are interviewing. Listen intently to the employer and respond confidently to the questions being asked of you.

Lastly, it is important to remember that you may not land your dream job as soon as you graduate from college. Keep in mind that any job is better than no job at all.

Continue to build your resume, gain experience in the field and improve your skills until you do receive your dream job offer.

Although your first job may not be your favorite, do not get discouraged or down on yourself. Perseverance is the key to success.
