Think that there is nothing to do here at West Chester University? Think again. On Wednesday Sept. 3, the Student Involvement Fair was held on the front lawn of Ehinger Gym from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Packed with tables representing over 100 organizations WCU has to offer, it was a sure way to provide students with involvement opportunities, no matter what one’s interests are.
A variety of organizations set up picnic tables lining the paths within the lawn displaying information about who they are, what they do, and how students can get involved. With music blasting from the speakers of our campus’ very own radio station, WCUR 91.7 FM and the chatter amongst members this was truly a sight to be seen and one to be heard. As the afternoon progressed on, the sidewalks began to fill with eager students interested in the many organizations at their fingertips; the candy, dum-dums, popsicles and free lunch provided by ARAMARK added to the enjoyment
Tables included organizations from student governing, which includes Off-Campus and Commuter Association (OCCA), Residence Hall Association (RHA) and Student Government Association (SGA). These organizations allow students to become involved with the dormitory facilities at West Chester and give commuters the information necessary to meet fellow classmates even though they are not living on campus. Next were the service organizations, which provide students with the chance to get involved with their community and put their free time to good use. Some service organizations include Circle K International, Best Buddies, Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter and Traveling Across Generations. These organizations come together and volunteer for a wide range of our community including the young, the elderly, the disabled, the sick and the underprivileged.
Continuing along the sidewalk were the sports organizations displaying information about the Recreation and Leisure Program at West Chester as well as the many sports teams that are available to both men and women. Here it was discovered that students could become involved with and stay fit with club sports, intramural teams, open recreation slots and the fitness center located in Sykes Student Union. If anyone is interested in an academic organization, the fair hosted many tables for academic and the professional organizations as well. Tables included members from American Marketing Association, Earth & Space Science Club, French Club, History Club, Pre-Law Society, University Dance Company and West Chester Association for the Education of Young Children. These organizations allow students to take their majors to the next level and gain experience in their chosen field of study to better prepare themselves for the quickly approaching real world after college graduation. Wrapping up the path of involvement were the fraternities and sororities with their bright tables and energetic personalities. Alongside the social organizations were the governing councils, honoraries and programming. These organizations allow students to join in the vast community of Greek life at WCU and meet some people who will grow to be lifelong friends. These organizations are not only social, but they also serve an important purpose in our area as they volunteer and work hard to improve their community. Though there are many other organizations available at WCU, these are just a few of the organizations and clubs present at the Student Involvement Fair. Each and every student plays a significant role in the West Chester community, whether it is the University itself or in the borough. The Student involvement Fair was a wonderful chance to see the more than one hundred opportunities you have to leave behind your footprints and make the most of your college experience.
