Now that Homecoming has come to an end, it is time for the next great holiday Halloween. Personally, Halloween is tied for my all-time favorite holiday with Christmas. This stems a great deal from nostalgia. Every year I eagerly awaited dressing up, getting candy, and causing trouble. It was different from other holidays. Most big holidays mean family get-togethers, but not Halloween. This was a time for fun, where adults were only there to quickly give you candy before you scatter onto the next house. Halloween was a time for me and my minions (friends) to galavant around town.
Now trick-or-treating is (sadly) not the norm for people my age. That does not mean I do not celebrate. Once I realized the holiday was soon to be upon me I went to the nearest Halloween superstore. I stacked up on candy and a couple of fun things that included a screaming pumpkin. After that was done, it was time to get working on my costume.
Now that we are all older and more intelligent, we can have some more elaborate costumes. You have all year to think about it, so do not wait until the last minute. Find something creative that will get a good reaction. As we get older, our costumes get less and less scary. It becomes more of a chance to dress up or to make a good joke.
If I were to pick my favorite thing about Halloween, I would not hesitate to choose. It is the movies. I love scary movies. During the Halloween season, you will have a great number to choose from. I, of course, go with the classics first. “Pyscho” is one of my all-time favorite films. What makes it so great is all the iconic scenes, from the opening, to the infamous shower scene, to the chilling ending. It has been endlessly homaged and parodied. The original has not lost its effect. “Halloween” is still a classic and stands up to this day. “Friday the 13th” and “Nightmare on Elm Street” not so much, but they are still a fun time.
The best thing about these movies is the endless array of sequels. Catching a marathon on TV is always a good time. Zombie movies are always a favorite of mine. “Night of the Living Dead” and “Dawn of the Dead” are great gore-fests. If you want a really scary film then “The Shining” is a must. I saw that as a kid and am still afraid to enter room 237. They also have some good remakes of those movies. I was able to catch a great new movie, it is called “The Cabin in the Woods”. It is a great mix of scary and funny that turns some horror clichés on its head. Horror films, among other things, are a must to get into the holiday spirit. We may be growing older, but you never have to grow out of your Halloween spirit.
