Ms. Reliable herself, Aaliyah Wood is the perfect woman to spotlight. The early education major and oldest out of five siblings knows what it’s like to not only lead, but to nurture the next star destined for greatness just like herself. I asked Wood some questions to get her WCU community to know her a little more. Here’s what she had to say:

What inspired you to choose your major?

I chose to study education because I recognize the importance a high quality education has on one’s trajectory. I hope that from teaching, I can inspire the next generation to be lifelong learners who yearn to make a positive difference in society.

What career goals do you have?

Post graduation, I hope to teach 1st grade in a culturally diverse school district. After teaching for a few years, I hope to obtain my master’s degree in education policy and leadership. From there, I want to use my expertise to draft legislation that works to mend the inequities in education.

What’s a dream job you’ve thought about (even if it seems unrealistic)?

A dream job of mine is U.S Secretary of Education. I am currently reading Teacher by Teacher by John B King Jr, the former U.S Secretary for The Department of Education and his story is shifting my mindset. As I continue reading, I realize that with hard work, this dream of mine is an attainable reality.

How has being a first gen college student affected you academically?

Being a first generation college student has impacted me academically because it

required me to learn how to advocate for myself. Coming to West Chester, I had no prior knowledge of college culture and norms. Everything was new for me and I did not have the support of my family to help me navigate this new journey. It took strength and resilience to overcome the various obstacles I faced as a first generation college student but those challenges shaped me into the person I am today.

Has college taught you anything? If so, what?

I have learned many things as a student but the most important thing that I learned is to do it scared. This quote has helped me get through these past few years by encouraging me to take action despite my fears and worries. My mentor once told me that if fear is the only thing stopping you from going for something, it’s not a good enough reason not to try.

Who has been your biggest supporter or inspiration?

My biggest supporter has been my family and friends. My biggest inspiration is my Grandmom, Gwennie. She played a huge role in my life growing up. She believed that an educated mind is the most valuable tool that you can have. Her personal philosophy is a huge reason why I aspire to teach and why I want to make a difference in the United States education system.

What is your position?

My position on First Gen Rams is secretary. This role requires me to serve as a means of communication between the executive board and our general body.

How did you get involved in first gen rams?

I joined First Gen Rams on ramconnect my freshman year but I never attended any of the events. During my sophomore year, I received an email that the previous executive board was looking for new board members so I applied and got the position.

How has this organization impacted the community on campus?

This organization has impacted the community on campus by providing a space for first generation college students. First generation college students have such a unique college experience and it is vital for us to find community. Having people that can relate to your experience helps to validate your feelings related to the college experience.

What advice do you want to give incoming first gen students?

My biggest piece of advice for incoming first generation college students is to advocate for yourself. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and even if you are afraid, don’t let that stop you. I believe that it is better to try and fail than it is to not try at all.

What do you hope other first gen students get from this organization?

I hope that other first generation students feel as though First Gen Rams is a safe space and resources that they can rely on to get them through college.

What has defined your experience at WCU so far?

My involvements on campus have defined my experience. Through my involvement, I have been able to form many relationships with amazing people. I have also had the opportunity to make an impact on the overall campus community through these involvements which has been an honor.

I’m intrigued by Aaliyah’s goals in public service through her major and career aspirations in education. Her work with first gen rams has made a notable figure in her community and has laid a foundation for more things to come and achieve here at WCU. Some things she likes to do outside of school are reading, writing, drawing and going out for walks .
