On Oct. 11 2025, actress Diane Keaton suddenly passed away at the age of 79.  Leaving behind a career that spanned across five decades, Keaton was a beloved American actress who rose to prominence in the New Hollywood movement.  Starring in classics such as, “The Godfather” (1972), “Father of the Bride” (1991), “Annie Hall” (1977), and “The Firsts Wives Club” (1996), Keaton has time and time again delivered moving performances that have gone down in cinematic history as American classics.  Touching the hearts of many, Keaton’s recent passing has left many actors, directors and producers shaken and mournful in the wake of her death.

American actress and comedian, Bette Midler, most famously known for her role in “Hocus Pocus” (1993) and who co-starred with Keaton in the 1996 comedy “The First Wives Club,” was one of the first people to release a statement following her death. Breaking her silence, Midler released a statement reported by “Us Weekly,” on the subject of the actress’s passing.  Taking to the social platform Instagram, Midler captioned a post on Saturday saying, “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”

Similarly, American actress, Mary Steenburgen, who notably starred in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993) and “Book Club” (2018) alongside the late Keaton, took to Instagram to share her thoughts on the death of Keaton. As reported by “Us Weekly,” Steenburgen wrote in a touching tribute post, “This is how I will remember you. Dueling photos, you donned in your beloved polka dots, making me laugh and me, full of love and mad respect for your wild and unique artistry. I loved that you, who could struggle with social challenges, trusted me enough to come over for dinners and then, of course, dazzled everyone there with your crazy magic. I love that we both studied with Sandy Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse and that we both had cherished memories for all that, memories that we both loved revisiting together.”

Coming as a shock and sudden departure, many people were left wondering the reason behind the late actress’s passing.  However, releasing a statement to “People Magazine,” the family of Keaton recently shared this week her cause of death.  “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on Oct. 11,” reads the statement.  The Keaton family continued on to say that she, “Loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”

In an undisclosed source obtained by “People Magazine,” Keaton’s official death certificate confirmed that she passed away due to bacterial pneumonia and that “she had it for several days before she died.”  As revealed by the official document, reports disclosed that Keaton had been seeing a physician since the date of Sept. 24 and most recently seen on Oct. 9, two days before the death of the actress. Listing no other significant medical complications or contributions on the death certificate, the cause of Keaton’s death has been officially ruled as death by pneumonia.
