My journey at West Chester University began when I came here as a transfer student in the winter of 2023. At the time, I was a bit apprehensive about starting my studies since I had been out of school for a couple of years. Now, looking back, I can honestly say that this was the best decision I could have made, because I have thoroughly enjoyed the two years I’ve spent here, and it’s helped to prepare me for my future studies and career. Now that I am about to graduate, I decided to write a reflection on what has made my time at WCU special, and what I will most remember about my experience here.

First of all, I am grateful that WCU has allowed me to explore diverse interests and meet some of my closest friends. WCU makes it easy for students to get involved, whether that’s through participation in student organizations or making connections within their major or department. The school and the smaller communities within it do their best to foster a sense of belonging for students, and this is a very important aspect of helping students to enjoy their time at the university. While this is a fairly large school, there are always ways to find your niche, whether in the academic or personal sphere.

One of WCU’s strengths is that it offers unique educational opportunities. For example, I chose to attend this university specifically because of the Russian language program, which is not offered at any other state university in Pennsylvania. Although the Russian department is small compared to many others, the small size allows you to make deeper connections with the other students who are pursuing the same major or minor. This is something that the university should value, because having such unique programs helps attract students, expand their educational experiences and broaden their perspectives.

Additionally, WCU fosters vibrant student organizations. During my first semester here, I was involved in founding a new club and serving as its president. The experience of helping to create an official community of students who share common interests is sometimes difficult but ultimately very rewarding. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to explore your interests at WCU because every day, there are quite a few events held by various organizations on campus, which are easy for anyone to attend. In my experience, most organizations are very welcoming and enthusiastically accept students who stop by for an event. Additionally, I am glad that WCU has student organizations, as well as institutions such as The Quad, which provide an outlet for writers and artists, even if one isn’t pursuing a major in those subjects. I met many of my friends at WCU through student organizations, and I’m sure lots of other people can say the same.

Returning to the topic of academics, WCU provides a good foundation for further studies or a career. Firstly, the wide array of classes prepares students for many different jobs after graduation, whether they are directly connected to their major or not. Also, the departments that I’ve been involved with are quite supportive of students’ interests and plans, especially if you take the initiative to start such conversations. I was fortunate to connect with a professor who helped me immensely with the process of applying for graduate school and making connections within the field that I plan to go into. It is a cliché, but most professors are very happy to help you, whether that’s with classes, research or career questions, if you take the time to approach them and talk about it.

Finally, one important and often overlooked element that contributes to a positive campus experience is the fact that WCU has lots of pleasant spaces where you can hang out with friends, study or get involved in activities. There are many nice outdoor areas with open spaces, benches and beautiful landscaping. Many of the academic buildings have spaces for collaborative work. Of course, the library is an excellent resource in this regard as well.

Last but certainly not least on my list of things that contributed to my positive experience at WCU is…Rammy! As everyone knows, WCU has the best and most lovable mascot in the known universe. Rammy always brings a smile to my face when he comes to events or when I see him around campus. I will definitely miss him when I graduate! Rams Up!
