It’s not when you hear the clashing of steel,

No thunderous roars of something so real,

The death of a nation,

No warzone location,

Democracy dies by something more vile,

Blacker it is than the blackest of bile.

Democracy works when each of us vote,

But even that can become a scapegoat,

Yelling in one place to stop, don’t count,

In others an investigation you’ll mount,

It’s sickening so sickening that I have to say,

That I don’t think our democracy is here to stay.

There will be nothing left, no rubble just dust,

If we allow our foundational crust,

To wither away, yes the constitution,

Document that founded our institution,

It guarantees a transition of power,

But something tells me that it will be sour.

On the verge of a coup due to nothing new,

A party spouting anything everything not true,

You may be mad just as you should be,

And maybe this time we can see clearly,

Our republic being taken advantage,

Wondering every second how it will manage.

Something tells me we will be just fine,

If this country is to truly shine,

The word united must be worth more than its sound,

It must symbolize those Americans deep in the ground,

Lost to the fights of freedom for all,

In hope that democracy would never fall.

  1. Interesting poem you written here, Evans. Curious, did you look at the Washington Post title slogan when you were creating your poem? Regarding your poem, it appears that the US is still facing uncertainty of its future even after 2020. Due to the riots that occurred on January 6th 2021, along with the the second impeachment and acquittal of former President Trump in mid February, it leads one to speculate on where the mindset of the country is going. Regardless, your poem is very good.
