West Chester University is a thriving campus.  With so much to do for classes, however, many people are surprised when they realize everything else that is happening on campus.  Unfortunately many people simply overlook these great opportunities, and thus can never make the most of their college experience.

In my freshman year, I did not get involved in much. I signed up for the Quad, and wrote one article. It became something that I would “get to next week,” because I felt that I didn’t have enough time for it. Next thing I knew, I blinked and it was already May 9, and I was going home, waving goodbye to freshman year.

One of my biggest regrets that year was that I didn’t write for the Quad. I felt that my time was wasted, and that my potential was completely untapped. Right then and there, I vowed to get more involved come sophomore year.

My friends and I all had similar ideas about time management. We felt that we didn’t have time for all these other clubs and organizations. But after joining numerous clubs and organizations this year, I can safely say that not only do you have more time than you think, but you can still complete everything on your daily to-do list and still have down time. My involvement with the Quad is nothing like it was last year, and I have also recently become involved in WCUR, the camus’ radio station, as well as Greek life.

Getting involved is more than just a resume booster, however, it is a very rewarding experience as well.  I am overjoyed to open the Quad and see that an article I wrote was published that anyone on campus can read. Although I am still training to DJ for WCUR and have yet to have activities for Greek life, I am ecstatic to have my own show on the radio with a friend, as well as to see all the fun and interesting stories that Greek life can offer.

My mass communications professor said something very profound to my class about a week ago. He said, “You know, you need to get involved sooner than later. Don’t wait. Because, trust me when I say this, in the blink of an eye all of a sudden your college years will be over.”

This really spoke to me.  Although I am only a sophomore, I already feel like my freshman year just started yesterday and all of a sudden I come back to the realization that freshman year is already over. It is a lot to grasp, and it is true that before you know it, we will all be graduating.

The point that my teacher – as well as myself – are trying to get across, is that there is so much MORE to West Chester University than studying, going to class, and trying to get enough sleep every night. There are so many interesting and diverse clubs out there, and there is no reason not to branch out. Who knows what you could find? What are you waiting for?
