The much anticipated Eagles-Cowboys match-up just got even more interesting. The Eagles headed into the match-up salivating at the chance to finally hit Terrell Owens, the man who single handedly ruined the Eagles last season. Owens is a wide out capable of Super Bowl MVP caliber performances along with Emmy Award winning performances off the field, and last Wednesday was no different.
Owens was hospitalized after an overdose of pain medication that he had been taking to attempt to make a speedy recovery from a broken finger he suffered during last week’s game.
A police document obtained by media outlets before being formally released by authorities said Owens was depressed and attempted suicide, which Owens later denied. He said, he became groggy after mixing painkillers with supplements. Publicist Kim Etheredge, who made the 911 call, denied she removed pills from Owens’ mouth, as described in the police document, and said it was unfair for anyone to think Owens would kill himself.
Etheredge said in her press conference, “He was not coherent to speak, he had been taking pain medications.”
Etheredge described it as an allergic reaction and went on to say that she never thought he was trying to do harm to himself, despite what the police initially reported.
Thursday, police finally closed the case, calling it an “accidental overdose”.
“Terrell has 25 million reasons to stay alive”, said Etheredge right before she left the podium. She was referring to Owens’ contract with the Cowboys. He is certainly worth the price of admission. So far he has done everything he could possibly do to garner attention except actually playing football, and why do I have a strange feeling that we will see Terrell Owens on “Dancing with the Stars” some day?
T.O. is like a bad song you just can’t get out of your head. Most people blame him for the crash and burn of the 2005 Eagles. He caused problems in the locker room, complained about his contract, but until Andy Reid decided enough was enough and banished him, he was still productive on the field and he will be productive if he is healthy when it comes time to face the Eagles.
The Eagles made T.O. their scapegoat for last season. Forget about the defensive woes of last year. Forget about Mike McMahon. They say that humans can only feel so much pain before it causes them to pass out, and I think that’s what happens when you watch the Mike McMahon Eagles.
It was so incredibly brutal that we would rather blame Terrell Owens than accept the fact that the boys in the front office screwed up when they failed to obtain serviceable backups.
That’s right folks, the same people that brought you draft picks like Brian Westbrook and Donovan McNabb also occasionally screw up. Last year, they screwed up. It was not Terrell Owens that ruined the Eagles, it was the whole team. One player, no matter how bizarre and enigmatic, should ever be able to ruin a season.
However, it’s so much easier to blame Owens, and boo him. However, Eagles fans are now in a position where they are booing the guy that almost died. If this were a movie, and T.O. was the hero, Philly would be the bad guys. This could very well happen, especially the way Hollywood interprets sports movies.
Revenge is sweet, but this just tastes sour.
