Men’s SoccerThe WCU men’s soccer team added to the Homecoming excitement Saturday with a 2-1 win over Millersville, with the game winning goal coming with only 3:25 left in the game.

The Golden Rams were the first to score as Josh Harris knocked in a penalty for an early 1-0 lead. The Marauders rallied back at 51:52 with a goal by Matt Miller to tie the game at 1-1.

The Golden Rams came back late in the second half as Ricky Mucelli took a pass from Bill Harris and buried it in the net to win the game for the Golden Rams.

This win improved the Golden Rams record to 7-4-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division, 8-5-2 on the season.

The Golden Rams will visit Lock Haven Wednesday afternoon.

Cross Country
The West Chester men’s and women’s cross county teams competed in the 2005 Penn State National Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning.

This invitational featured mostly Division I programs, while WCU has a smaller Division II program.

The women’s team finished 33rd overall, while the men came in at 37th.

Kristie Kershaw led the men with a time of 24:28 to finish 212th. Rebecca MacBeill was not far behind, finishing 222nd in 24:28.

Tommy Pearson led the men’s team, finishing 198th with a time of 27:41, while Peter Gottwald finished second for WCU, 252nd overall, in 28:30.

Women’s Rugby
Although a loss was recorded for Saturday’s game, the West Chester University’s women’s team had an amazing performance Saturday morning, almost upsetting No. 1 Penn State Nittany Lions. However, the Nittany Lions scored the lone points of the game, defeating the Golden Rams 3-0.

The loan points came in the first half, when Amber Benlian of PSU tallied a penalty kick.

The Golden Rams defense was playing at top notch on Saturday, stopping PSU incursions into the tryzones. It was looking like the Lady Rams had a chance to score a try late in the second half, but their attempt was unfortunately halted by a strong PSU defense.

The Golden Rams are now 4-1 on the season, while the Nittany Lions improved to 8-0.

The Golden Rams will visit Anapolis, MD Saturday morning to play the Navy’s team.

Women’s Field Hockey
The West Chester University’s women’s field hockey team defeated the University of Rhode Island 3-2 in an important Atlantic 10 Conference game Friday afternoon.

The win improved the Golden Rams’ record to 1-2 in the A-10, 8-6 overall, while Rhode Island fell to 0-3 in the league, 5-8 overall.

Jenna Frankenfield scored the game-winning goal 1:08 into the second half off of a corner that was set up by Megan Gilelmi and Shelly Brooks.

Frankenfield had also scored earlier in the game off of Mary Ellen Wells to tie the game at 1-1 during the first half.

The University of Rhode Island had taken the lead twice in the game, but each time, WCU rallied back to take the lead and ultimately win the game.

Goalkeeper Carrie Hanshue added another win to her record after stopping two shots on goal.

The Golden Rams visited the University of Massachusetts Sunday Oct. 16, but the results of that game were not up in time to be placed into this issue of The Quad. This will be the last away game for the Golden Rams, and will host three straight conference games, starting with St. Louis, MO at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
