The Lady Rams advanced to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship game for only the second time in school history, after defeating Kutztown University 4-2 in the seminfinal contest held in West Chester, Pa. The Golden Rams are now 19-0 on the season.
The Lady Rams travelled to Indiana University this past Sunday to take on the Indians for the PSAC Championship. Unfortunately, the outcome of this game was not available before The Quad was printed.
The last time the Lady Rams were in the championship game was 1999, when they were defeated by Lock Haven 2-1. If the Lady Rams won this past Sunday, it will mark the first time in school history WCU will have earned a PSAC championship. This year, the Lady Rams were able to avenge their loss to Kutztown last year during the semifinals.
Julie Karcher headed in the first goal of the game only 6:56 into the contest off of a pass from Lauren Ginonna.
The Golden Rams 1-0 lead lasted for most of the first half until the Golden Bears knocked a goal past WCU goal keeper Hilary Smart to tie the game.
Ginnona helped the Golden Rams quickly retaliate by kicking the ball into the goal off of a pass from Brittany Yetter only 35 seconds after Kutztown knocked in their first goal.
The second half got off to an exciting start when Lauren Boyer knocked in a penalty kick to give the Golden Rams a 3-1 lead and the winning goal. She was awarded the penalty kick after she thought she had scored a goal.
Kutztown retaliated soon after Boyer’s penalty kick, to give the Golden Bears two goals of the day. This was only the second time in the 2006 season that the Golden Rams allowed two goals in a game.
Karcher added an insurance goal shortly after Kutztown’s second goal to put the Golden Rams up 4-2. Karcher’s penalty kick was initially saved by the Kutztown goal keeper, but the momentum of the shot allowed the ball to trickle across the line for the fourth goal of the day for the Golden Rams.
Karcher now has 43 points on the season, only two behind the 45 point record she shares with other Golden Rams.
