The West Chester University Journal of Undergraduate Research is now seeking submissions. Students can submit research papers written within the past year, articles about ongoing research, or professional posters.
Students can find submission guidelines at http://www.wcupa.edu/undergraduateresearch/journal/. Students need to fill out a form, containing information such as their name, the year the research was conducted, keywords related to the research, and an abstract of 300 words or less. After filling out the form, students can email their research to UgradJournal@gmail.com. Response time will vary, though it should be within two weeks.
Research upon submission will be sent to the Associate Editor, who will then erase any personal information about the author and forward it along to two members of the editorial board. Editors will make suggestions (grammatical, spelling, etc.) that will be emailed to the author. The author will have the right to refuse any changes, although the journal then has the right to refuse to publish.
The Journal hopes to publish a print edition each semester, while also keeping an up-to-date website of student research. Students are highly encouraged to submit, as being published is a good experience and resume-builder. Research conducted for a class does not just have to disappear when the course is completed; being published can allow a further sense of accomplishment.
Students can also become editors for the journal. Members of the editorial board edit all of the student research before it is approved for publication. Editors are not required to edit a certain amount of research, simply as much as they have time for.
The Journal of Undergraduate Research was originally organized as a capstone project by Ben Rupert in March 2012. Ash Cochran, who graduated from WCU in spring 2013, continued organizing the journal and helped get it approved by SGA. Lindsey Todd, a sophomore, is the Editor-in-Chief for the 2013-2014 year.
Students interested in being published in or editing for the Undergraduate Research Journal can find out more information by joining the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/405065979523114/ or by emailing ugradjournal@gmail.com, or attending the meetings. The Undergraduate Research Journal Board (URJB) meets on Thursdays once a month at 6 p.m. in Schmucker Science South, Room 115. The deadline for submissions is March 1.
Theresa Kelly is a second year student majoring in English Literature Secondary Education. She can be reached at TK780615@wcupa.edu.
