If you’re looking for “something new” to do on Valentine’s Day, make it a point to see “Something New,” an irresistible romantic comedy that will keep you wanting more. While 42.4% of African American women have yet to be married, the very professional Kenya Denise McQueen (Sanaa Lathan) is determined not to become a statistic. She is an uptight woman who knows exactly what she wants, and has a very long list of “do’s and don’ts” to prove it. Kenya has spent her entire life looking for her I.B.M. (Ideal Black Man); however, when she is introduced to Brian Kelly (Simon Baker), a Caucasian landscaper, on a blind date, she has an unexpected change of heart. Kenya McQueen is astounded at her attraction to him, for he does not possess the typical “suit and tie” profile that Kenya usually finds interesting in Los Angeles men. Brian Kelly makes a bold attempt to establish spontaneity, excitement, and “something new” into Kenya McQueen’s monotonous lifestyle. While dealing with prejudices as senior executive, fighting to become partner at a very prestigious accounting firm, Kenya McQueen also has to fight the battle between her heart and overcoming the prejudice views of her closest friends and family members.
“Something New” is a great movie that does a superb job encouraging others to invite change. It gives confidence to independent thinking that “goes against the grain” and promotes one to think with their heart, instead of going along with the status quo. This movie was successful in discussing the openness of cultures and interracial dating in a very comical manner. It also brings to light reverse racism and exposes the hardships that Caucasians men have to face when dating black women.
Although the story is predictable, actors Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker make the story realistic and engaging. It encompasses an all-star cast including Sanaa Lathan, Simon Baker, Blair Underwood and the hilarious Mike Epps along with a host of others. Its release date is Friday, Feb. 3 and is a “must see” for all of the lovebirds or for anyone who is looking for “something new” in their lives.
