The Sand Huskies are 2-0 so far this season, and the hype surrounding this team is starting to get real. Tuesday night marked another blowout for The Sand Huskies as they defeated Straight Outta Canton 34-13. The Sand Huskies were led by MVP, Joseph Shields, and true freshman, Isaac Vasquez. “We’re having a good season so far, and we will be in the championship” said Vasquez, who started the second half at quarterback having totaled two touchdowns for the game (one throwing and one rushing). He also had an interception on defense, as well.
Vasquez currently runs track for West Chester and was a former wide receiver and free safety for his high school football team. When asked about his experience playing the quarterback positon, Vasquez had this to say: “I always had a good arm, I was just never given the chance.” Well, after his performance on Tuesday night plus his four passing touchdowns in the Sand Huskies season opener, I can tell you that we will be seeing a lot more of Isaac Vasquez at quarterback for The Sand Huskies. Vasquez has now been given the chance, and he has taken full advantage of it.
One of Vasquez’s targets (and current roommate), Christian Mitchell, came away happy about the win, but disappointed in his performance on Tuesday night. Mitchell’s frustration was reflected on the stat sheet as he was targeted a total of zero times at wide receiver. “I didn’t play any offense because I didn’t know any of the plays.” Mitchell is a former basketball player for Manheim Township High School, and he hopes his skills on the court will eventually transfer to the gridiron.
Although Mitchell’s performance on offense was less than average, to say the least, his play on defense is what kept him on the field. Mitchell is a big contributor to the sixth-ranked defense in the league, which only gave up 13 points on Tuesday night. “That team we played was beat. I compare our secondary to the Legion of Boom (Secondary for the Seattle Seahawks).”
Bill Parcells once said, “Defense wins championships.” However, having a great offense helps too. Led by Isaac Vasquez on offense, and Christian Mitchell on defense, keep an eye on the Sand Huskies. With zero losses so far, they hope to keep the streak alive next week as they take on the Dirty Girdles on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. on the football field.
