If you are thinking about becoming a Resident Assistant, you not only have to learn the tasks of the job, but also need to be understanding and good-natured to serve as a friend. Being an RA involves many different responsibilities. An RA is responsible for the overall operation of his or her floor or wing and also needs to contribute to the entire building. RAs are expected to be available to students during a majority of evening hours and need to work a certain number of hours at the residence hall. These hours may vary depending on the size of the hall. When the RA is on duty for the evening, he or she must remain in the building from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., and be ready for any situation that may arise. RAs are permitted to leave campus two weekends per month. However, they must notify their supervisor whenever they will be leaving overnight. RAs are role models for the rest of the residents. They are expected to abide by local, state and federal laws, as well as all University rules and regulations. If an RA is found violating any of these rules, he or she may be terminated. RAs are responsible for Health and Safety inspections. They also assist in check-in and check-out during the opening and closing of campus and during holidays. Aside from these jobs, RAs are expected to be a friend as well. RAs should establish and maintain a close relationship with each student of the floor or wing they are assigned. RAs can offer advice on academic, social, and personal matters.
Even if a student does not come to the RA, an RA should be aware of student problems and concerns including adjustment, homesickness, roommate conflicts and other issues. They are there to listen and help work through problems.
In extreme situations, such as long absences, sickness, accidents and/or unusual behavior from the student, an RA is expected to report the situation immediately to the Resident Director.
