West Chester exploded for 32 runs and 32 hits on Friday afternoon, sweeping Bloomsburg University and sliding back into first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division. The Golden Rams built a 12-0 lead after just four at-bats in game one to blast the Huskies 18-7, while seven runs in the top of the second gave WCU a 9-0 start that led to a 14-4 thumping of Bloomsburg in game two.
With Kutztown sweeping East Stroudsburg on Friday and first-place Mansfield splitting two games with Millersville, the Golden Bears of KU, the Mount-ies of Mansfield and West Chester are all tied for first place in the PSAC East with 10-4 records. All six PSAC East teams will switch locations and play another dou-bleheader on Saturday afternoon.
West Chester is now 30-6-2, posting its record-setting third straight season of 30 or more victories.
The school record of 32 was set last year. In the opener, Jeff Brennan moved to 9-0 on the season with a six-inning, six-hit performance as West Chester supported their ace with 18 runs on 16 base hits. Mike LaRosa, in just his second game since being shelved by a foot injury, went 3 for 6 with an RBI and a run scored. Erik Ruff had a monster contest with five RBI, a home run and a 3 for 6 game that featured three runs scored. Matt Redcay was 2 for 5 with a walk, two runs and an RBI, while Brett Wallace tripled and doubled, scored four times, drove in three runs and walked in three plate appear-ances.
Ryan Flynn and Josh Wagner each had two hits as well. In the second game, West Chester scored twice before exploding for seven runs in the second in a 14-4 taming of the Huskies. Ruff hit his second home run of the day, while Wallace and Jeff Lamb also smacked round-trippers. Redcay was 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs, while Ruff finished the game with four RBI, three hits in four at-bats and two runs scored. Wallace was 3 for 3 with two walks, three runs and two RBI. Mike Bergstrom claimed the victory, pitching all seven innings, scattering 12 hits and allowing just three earned runs.

The West Chester University baseball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division doubleheader with Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon, ironically moving one game closer to the single-season victory record while simultaneously inching toward the playoff abyss.
The Golden Rams dropped the opener vs. Bloomsburg by the score of 3-0, but rebounded in game two to edge the Huskies 7-6 in extra innings. The victory leaves West Chester at 31-7-2 overall and 11-6 in the Eastern Division of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
The Golden Rams need one win to tie the school record for victories in a single campaign (32) set last year, but the loss to Bloomsburg Saturday afternoon coupled with sweeps by Mansfield and Kutztown, has left West Chester a game behind in the standings and alone in third place.

Torrential downpour and windswept rain are descrip-tions that don’t even do justice to the cataclysmic weather the West Chester University and Bloomsburg University women’s lacrosse teams faced on Monday afternoon. But they could be apt definitions of the 35-goal explosion offered by both clubs’ offenses in West Chester’s 18-17 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victory over the Huskies. Kathleen Sheehan scored eight times and added two assists, while Katelyn Martin poured in five goals as WCU held on for its second straight one-goal victory over Bloomsburg in four days.
The win improved WCU’s record to 11-1 overall and 8-0 in the PSAC. WCU will clinch a playoff berth if it beats East Stroudsburg on Wednesday in the Poconos. The game was played in driving winds and rain, featuring temperatures in the low 40s. Christine Kane posted a hat-trick for WCU, while Kirstin McGoldrick scored once with a trio of assists.

Kirstin McGoldrick scored five times and Kathleen Sheehan recorded seven total points as West Chester clinched a PSAC Playoff berth with a 21-9 whipping of East Stroudsburg Thursday in the Poconos. The Golden Rams built a 14-2 halftime lead and never looked back to secure their 12th win of the 2004 campaign.
WCU is now 12-1 overall and 9-0 in the PSAC. Sheehan scored three times and added four assists, while McGoldrick tallied her five goals, tossed in one helper, and finished with six points for the day. Danielle Roy tallied three goals and an assist in the win, while Caitlin Pettit scored twice with two assists. Ariel Cocco also had two goals coming off the bench.

Kathleen Sheehan scored four goals and registered an assist, but it wasn’t enough as Division I Longwood University up-ended West Chester 16-10 in a non-league lacrosse game Sat-urday in Farmville, Va.
The Golden Rams received a hat-trick from Katelyn Martin and single goals from Danielle Roy, Kirstin McGoldrick and Christa Somits. McGoldrick and Caitlin Pettit each had assists in the loss.WCU will face Mill-ersville on Monday in a PSAC contest.

Ryan Waltermyer posted the fifth-fastest NCAA Division II 800-meter time of 2004 on Saturday at Widener where the West Chester University men’s and women’s track and field teams each had a decent showing. Waltermyer finished second in the 800 meters and appears to be gearing up for the PSAC and NCAA II meet in May.
Golf

The West Chester University men’s golf team is currently fifth after 18 holes of the PSAC Championship. The two-day event will resume on Sunday at Hawk Valley in Denver, Pa, on the club’s par 72, 6,743-yard course.
The Golden Rams are two strokes behind Slippery Rock and Clarion – both tied for third with one-day totals of 310 each. IUP leads the event with a 295, while Millersville is one shot off the pace at 296. West Chester’s Jared Miller leads the way for the Golden Rams. He is eighth overall with a 75 to finish three over par. Nick Parise and P.J. Politan each fired rounds of 80 to stand tied for 18th.
