In the town of West Chester, there are hundreds of businesses to visit. By the time someone graduates from West Chester University, there’s a good chance they haven’t even seen half of the stores in this historical downtown area.
One business to highlight is the Artisanal Gelato and Dessert Café, Gemelli. Sitting down with owner Vincenzo, we got an inside look at the authentic Italian gelato, and the history behind it.
Originally from Ferrara, a city in northern Italy, Vincenzo moved to Pennsylvania in 2009. He came here, following a girl he met in Milano who was studying abroad at the time. A year later, he followed her over to the United States and is now her husband. Fast forward a couple of years, and they opened Gemelli together in 2014. Since then, their business has prospered and grown tremendously.
“When I moved here, I really missed a lot of things from home,” he said I always cooked growing up, so it was natural for me to keep cooking and trying to create as many things from scratch as I could. Gelato is something that I grew up with and am very familiar with, so I decided to train professionally and open Gemelli here in town.”
Although Gemelli focuses mainly on gelato, they offer a wide variety of other sweet treats like coffee and espresso, chocolates and Italian desserts.
One thing Vincenzo really focuses on with his creations is to keep it authentic, and to create a feeling of being in Italy in his store without the plane ticket. Walking into Gemelli is relaxing, welcoming and is like stepping into a part of Italy for a while.
Another thing that serves great importance to Vincenzo and his business is that everything he serves is made from scratch.
His creations have no colorants, preservatives or anything pre-made. All his treats are made fresh every morning. Another Italian tradition they follow is that they pasteurize in their own store. They follow Italian discipline, so their gelato remains authentic and pure.
Vincenzo explained, “We juice our own lemons, make our own caramels and nut butters and find the freshest local produce to create our gelato.”
You sure can taste it, too. Taking a singular bite, flavor automatically fills your mouth, and your taste buds will not be disappointed. Gemelli has so many different and unique flavors to try, you’ll leave wanting to come back for more. Their gelato isn’t the only thing worth getting. Previously mentioned, their coffee selection and desserts also have a taste like no other.
Gemelli was voted “Best Gelato in North America” in the “Best of the Main Line and Western Suburbs” competition hosted in Manhattan. West Chester is proudly home to this Gelato World Tour Winner, along with winning numerous other awards since their opening.
Gemelli Artisanal Gelato and Dessert Café is located at 12 Market Street, right in the heart of West Chester’s town. Their store is hard to miss with their signature teal exterior, so make sure the next time you’re craving a sweet treat, stop on in for some authentic Italian gelato!
