West Chester University Women’s Rugby team made a triumphant return claiming two victories against Brown and Bloomsburg University to open the 2019 Fall Season. The Womens Rugby is one of the few Division I Varsity teams at West Chester University. Winning three tournament championships in their 2019 spring season, they are a force to be reckoned with this fall.
In their season opener the team defeated Brown University. They claimed victories in the following two games defeating Bloomsburg University and Sacred Heart University, this past Saturday.
The Women’s Rugby team will continue to have an impressive roster this season with “the largest recruiting class [we’ve] ever had this fall,” explains Coach Anthony Deremer. Nearly all of the 11 new recruits have a previous knowledge of the game which Coach Deremer says “really turned up the intensity and learning curve at practices.”
Captain Juah Toe also appreciates the new players saying, “our incoming freshmen excite us so much because they are so talented and bring so much intensity to the game.”
The Women’s Rugby team has their eyes on winning the championship this season. They know it will take hard work and dedication. Toe acknowledges, “championships aren’t won on the day of the game. Championships are won in practice, in lifting, and every conference game leading up to the championship. We need to keep our eyes on the big prize but we also need to achieve our daily and weekly goals until then.”
With a team of hard workers, the passion in these players is not missed. Toe emphasises, “our strong suits are our camaraderie and our heart.” The team has formed a family bond, playing more for just themselves individually. In the end, “We play for each other which drives us to make big hits and run through tackles. We play with each other but we also play for each other.”
