Asexual Awareness Week will take place from Monday, Oct. 19 to Sunday, Oct. 25 this year.

The Asexuality Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) defines an asexual as “someone who does not experience sexual attraction.”

According to AVEN, “asexuals are generally very different from one another: some experience romantic attraction, some don’t. Some experience arousal, some don’t.”

West Chester University’s Gender Studies Club will celebrate Asexual Awareness Week at their next meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

During the meeting, which will feature free food and drinks, they will give a brief lesson on asexuality before allowing club members to engage in discussion.

All are welcome and encouraged to come to this meeting, even if you have never been to a meeting before.

Gender Studies Club planned this event after club members spoke about asexual erasure on campus. Their biggest complaint was the “A” in “LGBTQA” officially stands for Ally here at WCU.

AVEN explains, “The phrase “A is for Allies,” used in isolation, conjures memories of marginalization and exclusion from LGBTQ+ groups for many asexual, aromantic and agender people, for whom invisibility and erasure are still huge problems.”

Visit AVEN’s website, asexuality.org, for more information on asexuality and Asexual Awareness Week.
