#DubCHomecoming14 took West Chester by storm this past weekend.  The events of the week were all inspired by this year’s theme, “The Amazing Race.” All the hype led up to proud West Chester students at Saturday’s game.

On Monday, Oct. 13, the first event of the week took off. It was called “Around the World in 80 Plates.” From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. students stopped by the Sykes ballrooms to try foods from each continent. There were cheeseburger sliders from North America, mini shepherd’s pies from South America, spring rolls from Asia, meatballs from Europe, chicken and barbeque sauce from Australia, shrimp skewers from Africa, and snow cone cupcakes and ice water from Antarctica.

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, the second event of the week took place, “Routes Roadblocks, and Detours.” Students gathered in the residential quad from 6 to 9 p.m. and competed for a chance to win a homecoming t-shirt.

Students first had to eat a cup of Jell-O filled with gummy worms. Then, they had to get a piece of gum out of whipped cream using only their mouths and blow a bubble with it. After that they moved on to the three-legged race where they competed against other teams and had to sing the West Chester fight song upon completion. Then, student had to play a quick game of ladder ball. And finally, students finished the race by playing a bean bag toss.

On Wednesday, Oct. 15, the third event took place. “Where in the World is West Chester?” was held in Sykes Ballroom A from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students enjoyed cheese fondue while marking where they are from on a gigantic map.

On Thursday, Oct. 16, the fourth event took place. The band Gaelic Storm performed at the Asplundh Concert Hall at 8 p.m. Gaelic Storm is a Celtic band whose popularity skyrocketed after their appearance in the movie “Titanic.” Students had a great time at the concert, and some lucky students even got the chance to meet the band afterwards.

On Friday, Oct. 17, the fifth event of the week, “Meet the Greeks,” occurred at Ehinger Gym at 8 p.m.

Then, students gathered at Sykes After Dark for a homecoming dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. There were novelties, free food, giveaways, and karaoke.

On Saturday, Oct.18, the big day finally arrived. The Rams were up bright and early for the homecoming parade at 10 a.m. After the parade, the dance competition set off. There were incredible “Amazing Race”-inspired dances from sororities, fraternities, and other clubs and organizations.

Then, at 2 p.m. the Rams dominated Shippensburg. Thus West Chester University remains undefeated this season!

For this being my very first homecoming, I had an amazing experience. I was skeptical whether or not West Chester could truly bring it this weekend, but my expectations were more than exceeded.

All of the events throughout the week were so fun and helped me to conquer another boring week of 8 a.m. classes and evening classes. I can’t wait to see what WCU has in store for next year’s homecoming, but for now, it’s time to say farewell to “The Amazing Race.”
