Water Water Sale. Greek Alumni Still Dousing West Chester University with Service

WHO: Zeta Psi Alumni Society of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity

WHAT: Fundraiser

WHEN: Friday, April 22, 2005

WHERE: Hollinger Gym, West Chester University

“We’re not done yet” says Khary Moody, WCU graduate and Brother in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. In what can be construed as a lifelong commitment to the University, alumni Brothers from the Zeta Psi Chapter have been engaged in a variety of efforts to show their continued support to their alma mater.

The Water Water Sale’s purpose is to establish a scholarship fund for West Chester students in honor of former student, Jerel “Water” Spruill. Jerel was the victim of a tragic car accident in Washington, DC two years ago. Last year, the Black and Latino Greek Council paid tribute to his memory by naming its annual stepshow The Jerel “Water” Spruill Memorial Stepshow. Jerel pledged Alpha Phi Alpha at West Chester in 1996 and was a member of the hip hop group, The Spooks.

The Spruill family and the alumni Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha secured the services of Liquid Designs, a Seattle-based water bottling company to package the water. “We Alphas are very ingenious when we want and need to be,” says Mark Barnes. Mark is the Alumni Society’s acting Chairman. Mark pledged Alpha Phi Alpha in 1990, and graduated from the University in 1993.

In addition to the Water Water Sale, the Zeta Psi alumni have co-sponsored a Back-to-School BBQ with the Black Caucus Chapter of the General Alumni Association, established the semi-annual Dr. Philip P. Hoggard Legacy Forum in conjunction with the University’s Frederick Douglass Institute, and co-founded The Fasces newsletter. The Fasces is the communiqu for the Zeta Psi Chapter and its Alumni Society.

Alpha Phi Alpha is among the oldest and most loyal investors in higher education. What began as a study group of Black men who defied racial segregation at Cornell University in 1906, its concepts for community advancement and inclusion in higher education have created 692 chapters throughout the U.S., Africa, West Indies, Europe, Asia and the Virgin Islands. The Fraternity has been interracial since 1945, and over 175,000 Brothers have bonded to advance its aims: manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind.
