While many students and faculty were enjoying their fall break last weekend, the men’s golf team and women’s rugby team were hard at work earning conference championships. Men’s soccer has also been hard at work earning a berth into the PSAC post-season. Last weekend, the men’s golf team charged into the PSAC Conference Championships with high hopes, and came away with the title. The Golden Rams had captured their first league title since 1969, 37 years ago. This is only the third title WCU Golf has ever captured.

Jared Miller of WCU received the individual title of the league, finishing the tournament with score of 145. Leading the field, he finished the first day with a stroke count of 71, and added only 74 on Sunday to walk away with the title, leading the Golden Rams to victory. Miller walked away as an All-PSAC performer.

The two-day, 36-hole event was held at the Wren Dale Golf Club from Saturday Oct. 14 through Sunday Oct. 15. At the end of the first day, West Chester was out in front, with a four stroke lead over Millersville and IUP. The team posted a score of 303 at the end of day one.

On the second day, the team dropped three strokes from their first day total to post a score of 300. Juniors Matt Sullivan and Dominic Frassinelli ended the tournament right behind Miller, tying for third place overall. They each posted a two day total of 149. First year students Zachary Fausnaught and Mike Makaila also tied in this two-day tournament, finishing with a score of 165 for 28th place.

Makaila shaved 11 strokes off of his first day score, the most from the Golden Rams, to help reel in the victory.

While the men’s golf team was raking in a long awaited conference title, the No. 9 WCU women’s rugby team captured its conference title for the second season in a row. The Lady Rams defeated rival Princeton University, 20-5, for the regular season title and a bye in the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union Championship.

The win improved their record to 4-1 on the season, and 2-0 in the EPRU Divison I. Princeton suffered its only loss of the season to the Golden Rams.

Junior Katie Black scored the game winning try in the first half, after pounding in a pair of trys to give the Lady Rams a first half lead of 10-5. In the second half, only WCU made it into the endzone, as Cabrey Grey and Michelle Kirk each barreled in for a try each.

The WCU men’s soccer team is also heading into the post-season, after defeating Shippensburg University Saturday night in Farrell Stadium, 2-1.

The win improved the Golden Rams to 14-4-1 on the season and 12-3-1 in the PSAC. The 12 wins in the league conference set the record for most number of league wins in a season. The 14 wins on the season ties the most wins in a single season.

During Saturday’s game, Shippensburg actually tallied the first goal, but the Golden Rams were responded with a goal from Frank Demas. Zack Weaver scored the game winning goal, shortly thereafter to give WCU the game.

The Golden Rams will travel to either Lock Haven or East Stroudsburg on Wednesday in a PSAC semifinal game. The game
