The West Chester women’s gymnastics team traveled to Bridgeport, Connecticut on Saturday afternoon to compete in the ECAC Championships. The host University of Bridgeport finished the meet with a score of 192.350 while Southern Connecticut State University came in second with a 186.050. West Chester, who consistently aims to perform above 180, finished the meet in third place with a 180.125. The win marked the second straight conference title for the University of Bridgeport.
Freshman Kaley LaFleur was a co-rookie of the year and fell just shy of a podium when she came in fourth in the all around with a score of 36.875. She was followed by teammate Alli Aquila who finished in fifth with a 36.375.
Throughout the season, West Chester has continued to excel on the vault and on floor. This meet was no different as West Chester performed best on the vault and had all posting scores above a 9. Their total vault score was a 46.475. Aquila came in first for the Rams with a 9.5, which also tied her for fifth overall. Melissa Voskian scored a 9.3 and Felicia Massaro and Alison Mitrosky both finished with 9.25.
Head coach Barbara Cordova was honored as well as the co-head coach of the year.
West Chester, who came into this season hoping to improve upon their previous year, was able to meet expectations set at the beginning of the season. Last year, their team average on the season was a 177.808. The Rams average for this season is 179.036, which is much closer to their target of 180.
The Rams posted their season high score against Penn earlier in the month when they scored a 182.300.
The USAG Nationals will be held in the middle of April and West Chester will find out if they will have competitors that qualify within the next couple of days.
