Dear Editor:Earlier this year on September 13, the Federal Assault Weapons Ban that had been in effect for 10 years quietly expired without much noise. The main reason for this expiration is due to the Bush Administrations failure to push the Republican controlled Congress into acting. Many people do not understand that now high power automatic weapons that are specifically designed for military use are once again going to be flooding our streets and neighborhoods. Weapons that are designed to fire a high number of rounds very quickly are now once again readily available to the public and criminals across the country. Because of the current Administration’s lack to do anything about this problem, mainly because of pressure from the National Rifle Association (NRA), many state governments have taken the problem into their own hands by passing state assault weapons bans. Unfortunately Pennsylvania is not one. Because of this I am asking citizens of Pennsylvania and other states across the Country to write to their elected local officials and encourage them to vote in favor of legislation that would create another Assault Weapons Ban.
